Paradiso at the Cathedral 5 March, 2015

true_gritThis coming Thursday 5 March 2015 7pm to 9:30 pm, Christ Church Cathedral continues Paradiso at the Cathedral 2015, a film festival hosted throughout Lent by Bishop Greg Thompson.

Come along to see True Grit (2010).

Fourteen-year-old Mattie Ross (Hailee Steinfeld) joins an aging U.S. marshal (Jeff Bridges) and another lawman (Matt Damon) in tracking her father’s killer into hostile Indian territory in Joel and Ethan Coen’s adaptation of Charles Portis’ original novel.

During the traditional forty days of Lent, Novocastrians will have the opportunity to attend a film festival with a difference. Christ Church Cathedral will be the dramatic backdrop for the screening of a series of international films, providing a space to explore the universal themes of love, redemption and hope. More information…

Paradiso Lenten Film Festival 2015

darkhorseposterCommencing Thursday 19 February 2015 7pm to 9:30 pm, Christ Church Cathedral presents Paradiso at the Cathedral 2015, a film festival hosted throughout Lent by Bishop Greg Thompson.

The first instalment kicks off  with a screening of The Dark Horse (2014), a New Zealand film by James Napier Robertson based on the true story of a charismatic, brilliant but little-known New Zealand hero and chess champion – Genesis Potini. The film follows his journey as he searches for the courage to lead, despite his own adversities, finding purpose and hope in passing on his gift to the children in his community.

Dietrich Bonhoeffer remembrance service

Dietrich BonhoefferA service of remembrance to mark the death of Dietrich Bonhoeffer 70 years ago will be held at 6pm on 9 April 2015 at the cathedral.
The service will take the form of a vigil and will feature:

  • An opening anthem and postlude by the cathedral organist, Peter Guy
  • A formal welcome by the Dean
  • The two hymns composed by Bonhoeffer
  • A lament, two canticles and an anthem sung by Counterpoint, a diocesan ecclesiastical choir
  • Reading of poems by Bonhoeffer and W.H. Auden dedicated to Bonhoeffer
  • Extracts from Bonhoeffer’s ‘Letters and Papers from Prison’
  • Bonhoeffer’s commentary on Ps 42
  • A Scripture reading relevant to the occasion
  • Responsorial prayers and a litany of commemoration

Fr Erich von Dietz, a former chaplain at UoN and a relative of one of those who plotted with Bonhoeffer in the failed 1944 assassination plot against Hitler, is preaching on Romans 5: 5, and the bishop, the Rt Rev’d Greg Thompson, will deliver the blessing.

The focal point of the service will  be the extinguishing of a single candle on the high altar to symbolise Bonhoeffer’s death.
