Earlier this year the Cathedral Chapter met to discern whether there was a priest well known to the Cathedral community with the gifts and talents to be called to minister as Dean of Newcastle.

The Chapter elected the Reverend Canon Stephen Williams. He commenced ministry among us at 6pm on Sunday 23rd June – the Eve of the Feast of St John the Baptist.

Formerly the Rector of Merewether and the Stretch Canon he has served on the Chapter, Council, and Board of the Cathedral as well as other Diocesan bodies. He is married to Sue.

 The Reverend David Cole will continue in ministry at the Cathedral following the installation of the new Dean. Dr Cole has accepted appointment as an Honorary Minor Canon and will be known as the Canon Liturgist.
